Question - Skill Certifications
What PHP/MySQL web development certification programs exist that are acceptable to Human Resource managers and other hiring types (similar to MSCE)?
I am at the point that I want to start shopping my services around. But with limited development experience (only my own web application in portfolio), I am thinking that certification from a viable organization will help open doors. Suggestions, links, etc. are greatly appreciated. |

RE: Question - Skill Certifications
There really is only one PHP certification, the Zend one. As for other certs, you might look at becoming red hat certified.

RE: Question - Skill Certifications
I also recommend the MySQL Core certification (currently working on this myself). http://www.mysql.com/training/certification/candguide/sec-core.html
cheaper - and not as well known and accepted in PHP circles - brainbench certifications (though they are recognized by many major companies and I think the US gov't). I have more then a few of them myself. See here: http://www.brainbench.com/ |

RE: Question - Skill Certifications
I have some Brainbench certifications. I hung them up in my office along with family photos and people would look at them like "oooh, you're certified." I felt an urge to correct them say, "yes, I went to Hollywood Upstairs Medical IT College."
I do agree that Zend is the best option right now. When some asked me about attending one of the PHP conferences, I said "to learn." They replied, "Don't you do that in a school?" I returned, "PHP is one of the more popular languages on the web and few people teach it." Locally, ( http://foolsoft.blogspot.com/2005/06/earn-money-for-someone-else-while-you.html and http://foolsoft.blogspot.com/2005/01/ill-learn-perl-after-i-teach-it.html ), we have a bunch a scam technical colleges that sort of teach PHP (and Perl). Unfortunately, formal training and certification isn't as common as what you would find with Microsoft. |
