Drop down box resets when Submit is clicked

I have a drop down box that is populated from a MySQL database. When the user chooses an option from the list and clicks "Submit" the form calls itself ($PHP_SELF) but when the screen is re-drawn the user's choice is no longer showing in the drop down list but rather the first option from the list.

Is there a way I can make the form remember the user's choice so that is displays in the drop down after submit has been clicked?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Drop down box resets when Submit is clicked

Yeh! Say you populate drop down like this:
php Code:
Original - php Code
  1. echo "<select name='country'>";
  2. while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)
  3.  echo "<option>".$row['countryname']."</option>";
  4.
  5. echo "</select>";
now to get default selected value which is selected by user before clicking submit:
php Code:
Original - php Code
  1. echo "<select name='country'>";
  2. while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result){
  3.  if($_POST['country']==$row['countryname'])
  4.  echo "<option selected>".$row['countryname']."</option>";
  5.  else
  6.  echo "<option>".$row['countryname']."</option>";
  7. }
  8. echo "</select>";

RE: Drop down box resets when Submit is clicked

Only half an hour to respond? What took you so long?

That's EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you very much, and so quick too.

Thanks again.
