Refresh A part of a page

Hai friends i am facing a problem i want to refresh a part of a page without using frames please help me ...

you could do an area refresh if you use multiple pages to build up the site eg a navigation.html and main.html you could probably refresh by passing a value to a php script. But im not sure about it never had the need too before also couldnt you just use IFRAMES?
