Javascript - Stop partial screen update

Please, is there a pair of commands such as screen update = false and true in javascript. As the javascript executes I get a poorly formatted refresh followed a few seconds later by the properly formatted screen. I't like to turn off the screen refresh until the page is all ready to display. Thank you.
