Two Questions
1)
Is it possible to use the highlight_string function as a user types into a textbox?

2)
Can you number each line of a text area and show the line number on the left of the area?

No, it isn't This would require a page reload after eah keystroke by the user.

Yes, this is possible. You'll need some javascript for it. Unfortunately, my JS skills are terrible, so hopefully someone else can help you on this.
