RE: New to Sql

You are right that there are a few different sqls around. Your best bet is to learn standard SQL. Most of the others adhere atleast most of the way to the standard. Then, each system has it's own extensions to the standard. I wouldn't worry about which extensions to the standard to learn until you know what database system you are going to use. I.e. Microsoft has its own, Oracle its own, etc. As for seeing what the differences are, you would probably need to grab a manual for each and read through, as the difference can be numerous.

RE: New to Sql

There is a great introduction to SQL on-line course offered through many colleges and universities in the U.S. The course is called "Introduction to SQL" and is facilitated by Cecelia Allison. I found the course to be quite informative. Ms Allison is very attentive, thorough, patient, and knowledgeable. So far it is the best course on SQL I've seen. I learned a lot and was able to apply what I learned. If anyone is serious about learning SQL and wants a simple approach to learning SQL, check this course out. You can find a school near you at:
