Code for free

I just want to get some older and wiser opinion on this one. I've noticed a lot on this forum (well, not general chat but php code) where people come here expecting to have code done for them. To a certain extent, it doesn't bother me. But when they say something like, "This is my programming thesis, how do I do it?" or "I have no idea how to program php, can you post the code?"... this upsets me quite a bit. Part of me wonders why I don't have their job and the other part feels that it's because of people like this, we have a lot of the bad code we deal with in a variety of programs. I'm still fairly young and still need to finish my CS degree and people around me that are finishing CS degrees don't know how to program themselves... Any words of advice from those older and wiser than me to someone who's still new to this whole scene? Thanks in advance.

RE: Code for free

Something I learned not all too long ago was that this is just the way things are in IT. 90% of the people in IT are idiots. They do it for the money, but they don't even enjoy the technology. I used to attempt to point out to my superiors how much of an idiot other people were, but I have finally seen that it doesn't do any good except to make you look like you think your are better than everyone else.

Now, I just do the best job I can and don't worry about if other people are capable or not. I do old people accountable though. If someone is in a job and I have to interface with them, I will not hold their hand or do their job for them. If they can't hack it, they need to figure it out...not me.

Thanks matt. I'll try to keep that in mind. Of course, anyone else that has so advice to give, it would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Code for free

i quit my IT job, mainly because of the people like you're talking about. stupid people above me, telling me to use technologies that were inferior, causing me to take 10 times as long to get it done and un-willing to be open-minded to anything they weren't familiar with. it just wasn't fun anymore and i wanted my hobby back. so i decided no more web work for me unless it's contract (so i get to choose). haven't been happier in a loooong time.

RE: Code for free

I hate hand holding personally and refuse to do it. I have been lucky though that at my job I am usually the junior one - so I am usually the one asking the questions. But then - I am also the only web developer so no one questions what I do or how I do it for that.

give some time - I'm sure I will run into them soon enough.
