do one thing, but do it well..

i can't find the thread where i stated this about google (that they shouldn't go portal-like), but here it is, straight from the google's mouth, rated as their number 2 priority..

2. It's best to do one thing really, really well.

Google does search. Google does not do horoscopes, financial advice or chat. With the largest research group in the world focused exclusively on solving search problems, Google knows what it does well and how it could be done better. Through continued iteration on difficult problems, Google has been able to solve complex issues that stymie others and provide continuous improvements to a service already considered the best on the web. Innovations like Google's spell checker and the Google Toolbar, which enables users to search using Google from any website, make finding information a fast and seamless experience for millions of users. Google's entire staff is dedicated to creating the perfect search engine and work tirelessly toward that goal.

In a few years they will end up branching into different aspects of the web, theyve already started with gmail.

I still contend that their Gmail service fits very well under the area of search. Why do you think they have such large quotas? You can store a ton of email and use their search technology to look through it. The problem is that it's a different way of using email than most people are used to (and possibly have a real need for).

My brothers using an account on GMail which they handed to him, and its the one mail server he hasnt complained about, all im saying is i think they srae starting to branch out, theres nothing wrong with it aslong as they keep the services as reliable as the google search is.
