RE: Handwriting instruction obsolete?
Quote:
All student laptops are kept in a locked/alarmed "Lapsafe" and don't leave the school/college. They're all have 802.11b to the Network and access files from there. Unfourtunatley... this dosn't stop them being stuffed in bags or thrown down stairs We have a PHP remote file access solution called the "24 Hour School" (which i made :d) to pull in files from home/download files to home for homework (with control over file types etc). We've also got a web record of homework, timetables etc for students to access. Every teacher also has a laptop (and some with palmtops) to take the register on! Dosn't stop some things being handwritten though - but does complement it! |

RE: Handwriting instruction obsolete?
Fine, call me a traditionalist, but I'm strictly against replacing handwriting with typing, and replacing textbooks with electronic textbooks.
Like cjrobs said, we'll always need little notes. I don't think that a computer (as we know the term nowdays) would replace post-its. It's a lot faster to grab a piece of paper and write a few words on it than to start up a computer just to type some words. Plus, think how stupid a computer would look like on a fridge door. I hate electronic books. Although I like reading, I find it annoying to read a long text from a computer screen. I don't know why it isn't comfortable, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who hates this. So why should we make kids hate school books even more? I'm not saying that typing skills shouldn't be taught at school. It's good that there are voluntary courses on typing. But handwriting shouldn't be forgotten. |
