ip to isp?

Is it possible to track this ip:

dsl85-99-42436.ttnet.net.tr

to an individual person?

RE: ip to isp?

Actually, that isn't an IP. You could convert that into an IP using DNS.

And yes, it is possible to track it to an individual person, but that will require the ISP to cooperate, which generally won't happen unless you're a cop or something.

RE: ip to isp?

it's not that easy. even if the ISP is willing to cooperate, it doesn't guarantee anything. for example, it could just lead to a compromised machine.

RE: ip to isp?

That depends on what we're looking for. I think the original question is if that address can be tracked to an individual person, and many times the owner of a compromised machine is an individual

RE: ip to isp?

did you use the address tripple provided to actually track down an individual person? if not, i think the original question remains un-answered.

RE: ip to isp?

Also, if the isp provides a non-static connection, the user connected to that dns could easily change from day to day or maybe more frequently.

RE: ip to isp?

I was up too late last night trying to figure out how this "Turkish Hacker" who appears to dislike america and Israel, hacked my new-born sons guestbook.

Took me a whole 30 minutes to figure out that I just needed to delete a single database entry and disallow html in future postings.

I dont care to do anything about it now as I have cooled off.

Ok, glad you sorted it. Security is often learnt from being hacked.

RE: ip to isp?

I see that that trippleweb has had some experience with the Turkish Hacker. My phpbb was hacked and being a newbie to php and trying to admin a website, I really could use some clues to find how the index.php redirects to a blinky hacking message. I did find a couple of references in the phpbb_config table with site_name and site_desc, but that only affected headers of other pages.
Any other insite to the situation would be most appreciated. How to shore up the security etc. The illegalteam hackers tell me on that hack page that "Hackers are not the bad guys" and they will help for free. I wouldn't doubt that I would get help from them a lot quicker than I would my web hosting company's support team. Sloooow!!

RE: ip to isp?

Okay... I found the html code in a 'forum_desc' field. So I learned something today. If anyone has any other advice, comments or ideas on this subject, let me know.
Thanks!

RE: ip to isp?

I'd just like to remind that PhpBB is a very widely used piece of software which means that there are many people who seek for weak points. When these weak points become general knowledge script kiddies will start to exploit them. What I'd do is find another forum system.

RE: ip to isp?

I'd upgrade your PHPbb, the PHPbb team is usually very good with closing holes when they find them
