RE: Linux recommendation?
Some people would say use SuSe as it is easy to install and configure but you may not be able to get the GUI to work as i had SuSe on a AMD 800mhz, 512mb ram, 32mb Graphics card and it always seemed sluggish.
I dont think that there is a "best" linux as its all about preferance. You could start with redhat but if you do chose a lower version eg Redhat 7.0 as it will more than likely run better. |

RE: Linux recommendation?
Thanks for your advice, I ended up downloading Red Hat 9, as it seemed to be the easiest to download burn and install, my computer currently runs on xp so I shall cross my fingers. I got anxious, what can I say.

RE: Linux recommendation?
Good choice. I made the switch from Windows to Linux about 2 months ago at home. I only wish they would let me use it at work.

RE: Linux recommendation?
I"ve tried to make the swtich before, but I never got around to it.
Quick question, a bit off topic, If I were to dual boot my machine that currently runs XP home, can I still access my NTFS partition from the linux partition? And like save and write to it, etc? So both OS's would have access to the files?? |

RE: Linux recommendation?
i have a RH9 machine that i use for offline stuff, i was hoping to bring it online but i cant get my head around setting up a speedtouch 330 modem with it. (To much firmware and config options, ISP'S dont they provide you with the cheapest modem around), ill have to get an ethernet modem.

I wasnt aware such a beast existed for dial up....I would get a serial port external modem, and install mgetty for your dial up stuff. |

RE: Linux recommendation?
its a broadband modem, looks like a crushed rat that winks at you every now and again (LED'S flashing as data is transfered etc). Why do ISP's presume your on windows, apart from it being easy for them providing these so called "Smart" modems which are not "Smart" in any way.

RE: Linux recommendation?
Even though they market such a thing as a broadband modem....its not really a modem. A modem is a modulator demodulator (hence the name modem) of audio signals. There is no analog sound in digital broadband. But anyway.....
I see your dilemma, hehe. Thats precisely why my broadband devices have ethernet on them...well, that and I like to run more than one pc with out a lot of problem. |
