need image manipulation app

Hello all,

I need to find (or build!) an application/page that will allow me to:

upload images
resize and/or crop those images
add text to the image (basically a vertical line of text on the side like this: http://www.aroundtherings.com/issues/2004/11/05/castellani.jpg) for a credit.

anybody have any ideas where i can get started? i'm a PHP beginner (verrrry beginning), but i can pick up and hack things pretty quickly to suit my needs.
