Research Info needed

Hi everyone, I am new to the forums here, but I do have very important questions as I am very low in programming languages. I am curious to what programming language different systems are made in- because it is bugging me in research:

How is the Digg button made- so that clicking it makes the count up by one w/out the page refresh?

How are log-in and individual page (ie. myspace, twitter*) modifications made?

And last but not least... any ideas of a good book/program to take for quick basics in programming language for the languages needed above?
