Thoughts on perl

For this project I'm working on I may have to use perl if the admins cannot load PHP onto the server soon enough. It seems like an allright language from what I can tell with my day and a half of experience, though I haven't found as many useful functions as in PHP. I'm interested in the opinions of the language from more experienced coders and perhaps some sugestions of good sites to learn from (I haven't been to happy with perl.com or perl.org for finding good examples)

RE: Thoughts on perl

PERL is a far more powerful language than PHP, but PHP prevails in web development because that's what it is specifically designed to work with while PERL is designed to do more. I'm pretty sure, PHP is written partly in PERL - that should give you some idea of its power.

RE: Thoughts on perl

this page says PHP borrows syntax from PERL, and this page says PHP started as a PERL hack, scroll a bit further and i quote: "Most of PHP's syntax is borrowed from C, although there are elements borrowed from Perl, C++ and Java as well."

so if not written partially in perl, it is influenced by perl at least.
