Time to Upgrade to PHP 5?

I am trying to figure out the right time to get on my Host's back to upgrade to PHP 5. There have now been 2 minor releases and it has been out for over 3 months. What are your thoughts?

RE: Time to Upgrade to PHP 5?

I don't think the time is here yet for a general host to move to PHP5. Too many programs are still not able to function properly on PHP5. I think it would be a good thing for hosts to offer a choice to their clients so that those that want PHP5 can move to a new server.

Some hosts are moving to using a php5 extension so you can test.

Ask your host if they have this extension.

RE: Time to Upgrade to PHP 5?

Are there any major hosts that are set up for php5? I am trying to find a host for an app I put together that uses some of the php5 functionality, but I want a host that I can get a dedicated server in the future when I need it.

www.AussieHosts.com
I don't know if they have dedicated servers.

Checkout their great reviews on www.webhostingtalk.com

RE: Time to Upgrade to PHP 5?

I couldn't find anything about php5 hosting. In addition, i noticed that on www.webhostingtalk.com
there is a moderator called aussiehosts.com makes it look like they are trying to make themselves look good on a "neutral" board.

RE: Time to Upgrade to PHP 5?

First of all they are good. When you call their number - the owner answers the phone. Whom-ever you speak to, knows what they are talking about and can immediately give you a sane answer to questions and follows through with that answer. Whatever they say they are going to do - they do and do well.

Secondly, with regard to www.webhostingtalk.com, I believe that they are not permitted to comment on topics involving them or otherwise interfere with comments involving them.

Thirdly, they were awarded PC host of the year in Australia. You don't get this award lightly.

Fourthly, don't just use that site as a guide - search on the web for them and try to find -ve comments.

Just because they don't advertise on their site that they support php5 doesn't mean they don't. - Why don't you just ask them?

Whomever you go with search for -ve comments first - past history often indicates future behaviour.

I would recommend not going with wisehosting.net - they ignore all cancellation requests, 6 months later claim that your requests were "invalid" and therefore ignored and then refuse to tell you why they were "invalid" in the first place. They also tend to double and triple bill you some months.

Good Luck
