Why PHP?

I am a new bie to PHP. Really interested in it because of its popularity.

But before I start, I'd like to ask someone experienced, "Why use PHP?". Since there are quite some dynamic web technologies out there such as jsp, asp, cgi, and so on.

Can someone with experiences to some of all of them kindly do a comparison or state you initial to learn PHP?

Thanks.

RE: Why PHP?

Well, Why PHP for me? I don't really know..I just needed to do something on a website one day that involved using a database and found how easy it was in PHP and fell in love. To me, it's just ease of use. But, just because it's easy to use doesn't mean that it's also not powerful enough to do whatever you need.

I would recommend checking this google search for more answers...

RE: Why PHP?

Thank you, Matt.

How long does it take you to learn to develop this site? Are you using GNU/Linux?

RE: Why PHP?

Hi, Matt. It seems everyone can edit our posts. Is this a bug?

RE: Why PHP?

No it's not a bug, because it isn't happening. Everyone can click on the edit button for each post, you can't SAVE the edit unless it is your post.

If something is different than this and you can edit posts please let me know, but I don't think this is the case.

RE: Why PHP?

In reply to the original thread, I already knew PHP before developing this site. So, it would be unfair to say "how long it took me to learn to develop it." This site has been under constant development since its incarnation also, so it's hard to give a timeframe on development of it...

RE: Why PHP?

Well, I can give an estimation on how long it took before I actually made my own script without asking anyone.

This code here http://codewalkers.com/seecode/86.html

Is not so hard to make for me nowdays. But I got involved in php/mysql about 9 or 10 months ago and I've got a great help and startup from a friend of mine that actually made a community as his first attemp and did really good.
He's now one of the best PHP Coders that I know of.

Well, It's really up to how good you wanna get ;)

And why PHP ?
Well, I fell in love with it, as all others do ;)
But Also I was looking for a Dynamic coding language last year and my friend was to. We found php and thought we should learn it. So we did. Easy as that

RE: Why PHP?

hope i don't get in trouble for this. but i work for [edit], and they use jsp, and it's horrible. either that or they can't find anyone to do it right..

also, PHP can run unaltered on any operating system that's one of my favorite things about it. not to mention it can do anything any other language (intended for web development) can do and then some. executes remarkibly fast. etc.

I don't know exactly how to do it but I have a m8 who posts news on his site from MS Access. I think hes got it to talk to MySQL through MyODBC.
