RE: Beginner PHP Code Contest

I think if you know c/c++ (isn't really much differences outside classes/structs and memory allocation), then php is a walk in the park. Php is very well documented, and if you have been programming c/c++ for any length of time, picking up php is very easy. Then if you've ever worked with perl, it's even easier to pick up still. So I think someone that's been programming in c/c++, perl for any length of time, shouldn't be considered a n00b.

RE: Beginner PHP Code Contest

I know, but u have know way of telling that, like if an xpert comes along and claims to be a beginner, then goes and wins a prise and theres no real competition.... you need a way to tell, but there isnt one

RE: Beginner PHP Code Contest

i think the only way to do it, is just have no prizes for the winner!! just a little recognition, that way, hopefully not too many xperts will try to join it, as you are right, there is no way of stopping them. And for the idea of one account per IP system, well thats useless aswell, as my IP changes every time i logon to the net, as does 80% of other peoples i presume.

RE: Beginner PHP Code Contest

Hi All

I have been using this site to answer my 'newb' questions and it has been a massive inspiration. Especially here, I learn the 'right' way to code things.

Having just read this whole thread through, I think that the competition winner should be the person who made the best 'effort'. What I mean by this is the person who has achieved a goal, but maybe NOT in the conventional manner. The results would be a good basis for learning how to create code in a better fashion next time. Anybody's code that is perfect, should pat themselves on the back and next time enter the more advanced topics.. The outcome of this competition could be judged by the experts who visit CodeWalkers. The threads that may follow such a competion would be ones that 'correct' or redemostrate some of the mistakes made by that individual. I personaly think that constructive critisim is a good thing and the gurus are there to be listened to...

Prizes?... well, if I entered and my 'effort' was selected as a good example, then I went onto learn where I went wrong, that would be reward enough!

This system would at least encourage us all to learn. After all, arn't the people who are seeking answers here purely driven by the aquisition of knowledge?.. I am

This type of judging would serve to further educate those willing to learn and not just 'show off' the achievments of an individual.

Thanx for being here CodeWalkers (competitions or otherwise ;)

Mike

To give an answer to fraggalot:

Myself, I would code my *** off for the glory ;) A beginner contest would be killer, but what makes you a beginner, and where goes the line? or even more important, who draws it?

now, there will be wrong to say "your not a newbie so this script is to good for this contest". that won't be ok at all..
its a problem, but such a contest should be based on trust.

If the noly price was the glory, then a

isn't longer a problem becouse you now get the glory of beeng found too good for that contest, and its time to move on..
Either way you'll get the glory.

RE: Beginner PHP Code Contest

I like this idea! I find it easiest to learn when I have something to strive for and it certainly does give you a chance to stretch your knewly acquired skillz . A prize isnt nessasary as just recognition on the news page would probably be enough.

As for the line between beginner and expert, I think that if you can easily ace a contest, you probably are too high a level phpCoder to be in it. Or, if you have trouble with almost every single normal contest, perhaps it would be better if you try a beginners one so that you could at least get participated and be involved in the ContestHype!

And like someone said, if you can easily pass a contest, you then know that you should be perhaps in a higher leveled contest.

I like the ideas of two deadlines. It would give everyone an idea of working within times without too much stress as they know they get a bit of extra time or whatever. It would also help to give everyone a bit of a rank. So you can then compare yourself to others and see whereabouts on the skillLadder you rate.

I would love to see something like that here.

RE: Beginner PHP Code Contest

as a really, really newbie here ( I don't think I can count Compugraphics back in the 70's although it was code and no preview...lol) I have found this thread fascinating. All the ideas are great and all have one thing in common, no matter how its set up, someone will spend a lot of time figuring out how to fool the system, just for the sake of doing it.

My thought while reading the first posts was maybe to post to each entrant a paragraph of really technical information and have the would be entrant explain it back. If they couldn't, like me, they're a newbie! but then, some expert might like the challlenge of trying to not re-phrase it in a knowing way.

Just trying to come up with a workable rating scale would be a good challenge .

I believe everyone ranks themselves according to their own scale anyway. I tutor a lot of people in many programs, only to see on their resumes the next day that they are now 'proficient' in programs that they only know how to open and close.....lol

Anyway, I've loved reading this thread and seeing so much imagination just going into the concept

Newbie and proud of it (I think)
Kathy
