[Down-n-Out] Small Question

One small question regarding the rules:

Is there possible to remove one (-1-) squere if there is no adjunctant hor. or vert. squares of same type, and obtain the score of 1*1=1 ?
Or is the minimun allowed removal of squares two (-2-) giving a minimal score of 2*2=4 ??

Hope my question is readable, understandable, and not to badly written.

Couldn't find the answer to this question on the forum or contest description, but only knows that it is normal for these types of games to dissalow the removal of single squares.
If it is written on the pages and I have missed it somehow, pleace point it out, and give me directions (and accept my apologies).
