Maximum number of words

Mat says that the maximum number of words on the grid 120 is. By my count the maximum is not 120. Asuming you use only words of length 3.

BUSAPO

Upper line contains four non existing words:
BUS, USA, SAP and APO

So there are four words possible at one line. 6 * 4 = 24

Horizontal and vertical so 24 * 2 = 48

It is also possible to make words diagonal.

php Code:
Original - php Code
  1.
  2. ABCDEF
  3. GHIJKL
  4. MNOPQR
  5. STUVWX
  6. YZABCD
  7. EFGHIJ

In upper grid there are 16 words diagonal, beginning upper right:
DKR, CJQ, JQX, BIP, IPW, PWD, AHO, HOV, OVC, VCJ, GNU, NUB, UBI, MTA, TAH, SZG

And also 16 words diagonal the other way...

24 + 24 + 16 + 16 = 80

Where are the other 40 words? Can anybody help me?

RE: Maximum number of words

> BUSAPO

Actually there are those words:
BUS, USA, SAP, APO (3 characters)
BUSA, USAP, SAPO (4 characters)
BUSAP, USAPO (5 characters)
BUSAPO (6 characters)

that's 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10 words in a line.

horizontal and vertical
10 * 6 * 2 = 120

So.. there are your 120 words.

There was nothing about diagonal words in the description.

RE: Maximum number of words

Teylen is correct on the word count and the fact that there are no diagonal words...

RE: Maximum number of words

Something I'd like cleared up:

If BUSAPO isn't in the dictionary, but BUS and SAPO are, can the top line read as BUSAPO?

I guess it's a question of word termination and overlap...

Thanks!

RE: Maximum number of words

Sure...as stated in the rules, words can overlap....

The top line could also read :

BUSIYO

where only BUS is in the dictionary....or it could read:

IBUSYO

again, with only BUS in the dictionary...

RE: Maximum number of words

[edit]
Never mind, I asked a question but I misunderstood a line in the contest description.

The line: "Then square the sum of the letters."

I should say: "Then square the points"
To my mind that far more easy to understand...
