Gates Interview

He also states that they are going to work with broadband providers to do scans to make sure everyone's system is installed correctly.

Two things come to mind:
- does this mean we have to make sure switch to dial-up access if we plan on using a pirated version of Windows?
- is this the same type of port scanning that Microsoft had to hide behind Linux to protect thier servers from a recently attempted DoS?

Man. I'm glad I switched.

To get back to what you's said about:

He also states that they are going to work with broadband providers to do scans to make sure everyone's system is installed correctly.

that would really mean microsoft could do what ever the wanted with your system, and I'm sure that as soon as that new system is about, the first hackers will be able to do the same as microsoft can do with your pc. (I'm more afraid of microsoft then of hackers )
and if microsoft would have their own firewall, then some users wouldn't bother getting another firewall, and then these people would be living in great danger !!!
hope my english is good enough

Believe me if Mac and Linux were as vulnerable as Windows, these "glory" hounds would not stop at Windows, and they don't. If I was Microsoft, I would employ a group of people to find vulnerabilities in Mac and Linux just to boost my business.

i'd have to, disagree.. if linux were as popular as windows, it would be hacked just as much. the only reason you "think" windows is more vulnerable is because you can't see the code which makes up the system. linux is not hack proof, people just don't care (...yet)

Yes, notepad , I think your right there, but it is a kind of cool thing to make a windows worm or something like that, because most people want to take target on windows, but if everybody would use linux tommorow people would start making worms for linux.

Welcome back Notepad :<).. Hope your tan.

I must admit I have wondered why there aren't more worms for Linux. Consider that most firewalls are *nix based, you'd think there would be more effort here. Of course there might be and we just don't know it

MS DoS... Talk about foreshadowing!

Personally I think this might be because of the role *nix plays in the world of computers.

Windows is running most of the desktop computers and, except for a handful, are run by non-tech savvy people. Those are the ones that are prone to virus and worm attacks.

What would the point be in a Linux virus/worm? Linux users/admins are faced more with rootkits and other hacker techniques.

Not without "strings" The Non-Profit is the Gates Foundation and they are giving out money, hardware and software to libraries, schools, and other types of entities. But half, a mear 1.2 Billion as I remember....

I believe this was part of a conversation I don't think I want to get back into

I think the school/library thing is only part of it; it does stuff for "global health" too. From the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation website:
Quote:
The foundation was created in January 2000, through the merger of the Gates Learning Foundation, which worked to expand access to technology through public libraries, and the William H. Gates Foundation, which focused on improving global health. Led by Bill Gates’ father, William H. Gates, Sr., and Patty Stonesifer, the Seattle-based foundation has an endowment of approximately $26 billion through the personal generosity of Bill and Melinda Gates.
