Unhappy Noob Setting up for PhpBB

Hello, I am totally new to making websites, but I really want to
set up my own hobby forum using PhpBB (Fully modded for preference)

I have looked at tutorial after tutorial, and nothing works, I just
don't understand what I am supposed to do, and nobody on the
PhpBB support website is willing to tell me how to get Php working.

If somebody could help me set this up it would be really great.

I have a Streamline.net hosting package with MySQL support on
a Linux server.

I have installed XAMPP, which is supposed to set up Php with an Apache server on my (win XP) computer.

If somone could explain what to do in layman's terms I would be VERY gratful, none of the forums I have been on so far will help me.

Are you asking about a problem of getting php to work on your computer or are you asking about how to install phpbb, either on your web host or on your computer?

Your post mentions several things but is not clear at what point you need help.

If you are asking about a problem of getting php to work on your computer, you need to provide as much detailed information as possible about what you have done and what symptoms you are getting for anyone to be able to tell anything.

For example, is the Apache web server working. If you put a .html file into the document root folder (or if one is provided with the XAMPP installation) when you browse to http://localhost do you get any HTML output page? If the Apache web server is working, then when you put a .php script file into the document root folder and browse to it, what do you get?

Getting Php working (at least to start with)

When I click on the Php.exe I get a black dos-box. I have tried using it to run the install.php (which is uploaded to the public folder on my web-address). I get a second dos-box full of writing that closes before I can read it, so I'm assuming I haven't set up Php properly, even though I am using a Php package that installed php and apatchie.
