I am taking a course in beginning php. I want to be able to check my code without having to ftp my server and so want to install apache. I am having difficulties installing apache on a windows platform. any idea where one can get help with this?

Download the windows installers from Apache.org and mysql.org.

Then download and extract the zipped version of PHP that you require.
Then you can follow the steps posted on Devshed here (http://forums.devshed.com/showpost.php?p=1845967&postcount=5) for example.
