RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erm... Not quite enough info!

What you have there are 3 php scripts. You don't need to install them, just copy them to your web server route then call them through your web server (e.g. if you have a web server running on your PC then http://localhost/foldercontainingscripts/scritpname, otherwise you need to call the scripts from the server they are located on).

Now if you mean how do you go about setting up a php environment... well that's a whole new kettle of slippery things!

"Now if you mean how do you go about setting up a php environment... well that's a whole new kettle of slippery things!"

Ahhh...I'm a php newbie - TOTALLY - and am wondering if this is what I'm looking for. I just did a tutorial about writing php, but what I really need to know is how to use it on my site. I do know my host has php 4 enabled and a test script worked, so I should be "good to go" so to speak, but am getting totally lost! What I'm trying to learn is how to utilize .php so I can use some scripts that allow affiliates (I use clickbank) to link directly to products. The scripts I'm thinking of purchasing all use php and I never used it before.

Did I make sense? Hope so - 'cos I'm super confused and not at all sure of myself here! tx!

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's cool - everyone has to start at some point. I kinda understand what your trying to do - and I can see why you want to know what's going on if you use a php script payment solution.

I'm the same - if I push a button then I ask what's it doing!

Your doing the right thing with looking at the tutorials. Could I ask a couple of question? Have you done much coding before (any language?) Do you intend to utilise php just for the payment service - or are you interested to start creating things yourself? Does your provider support mySQL?

Utimately - I find the best way of learning is to get your hands dirty. Set up a testing environemnt if you want (or use your provider if they support everything you need) and have a play!

Post back answers to the above and I will try to point you in the director of a starting place. Oh - what platform do you use to develop?

All the best, J

I'm happy to oblige - and thank you for responding. I'm still lost...but my host did say they had to fix something, so when my second test run didn't work, at least it wasn't ALL my fault! Okay, on to your questions - will do my best here.

I currently do HTML (basic, tables, etc.), CSS and know how to use pre-written javascript, etc.

I have never done any scripting languages at all before. What I'm looking at now is some script from webmasterinabox.com that would allow me to use my clickbank affiliate account to allow affiliates to link to individual products on my Web site, rather than having to link just to the home page. This script costs $45.00 and I want to know I can do this before I fork it over, you know!? I would - eventually - like to learn to create some things on my own if I can get a handle on this. And yes, my host does support mySQL.

Doing that one - hey, I'm on the right track! I ran into a snag last night, but my host just got back to me and said it should be fixed - haven't had a chance to fool with it yet.

I just use notepad. I do have ACE FTP freebie version but haven't done much in it but make a few tables - it confuses me so I keep going back to notepad! "DOH", huh! I was thinking of purchasing an HTML editor, so I wanted to try a couple, but that's a whole different issue!

Thanks again for your response - I hope my answers are sufficient - I do realize I'm not very savvy with this scripting business and probably sound ignorant, but well, I am!

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ignorant? - hush up! You've had the guts to stand there (type there ;)?), hold up your hand and say 'I'm new - where do I go?!'

Hokey Dokey - first things first. There are some good tutorials at this site which you have already started using, also, give Hotscripts a go:
http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Tips_and_Tutorials/index.html

and there's quite a good list of links to other places:
http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Web_Sites/index.html

I recommend getting hold of a copy of the PHP Manual if you haven't already:
Windows help file format:
http://www.angelfire.com/home/andryxa/
HTML version:
http://www.php.net/download-docs.php

(I've shown both formats cos you didn't say what platform your using to develop on )

I also think that it's a good idea to be able to develop locally. Now if you use a nix box then this isn't a problem - a version of PHP parser is very easy to find and 9 times out of 10 Apache web server is already ready to run on your machine without you knowing about it!.

If your using a Windows PC then I can point you in the direction of a PHP install - let me know. You would obviously need either PWS or IIS installed as a local web server. This would simply stop you having to upload frequently every time you change a line of php. I find that when staring on a neww language you are constantly changing, re-opening and going around in circles! (Hey - isn't coding always like that ;))

If I have gone to fast and you don't know what Apache is, got lost when I mentioned PHP parser or spun out when I was dribbling about PWS/IIS etc then let me know - I'll shut up and point you at a Introduction Tutorial!

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the great references - I may need to take you up on that beginnners..

And sorry, I use Windows!

I don't need to install PHP though - or maybe I should say I don't think I do - as my web host does have it available. If I understand this all correctly, I should be able to use php scripts on my site - just need to know how.

I got wrapped up in some other work yesterday and never did get to test the little bit I've been playing around with, but hope to do it tonight.

Thanks so much again, for all the links - something there should definitely be of help!

Jeni

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a problem Jeni, glad I could help.

One more link I thought of last night is
http://www.phpbeginner.com/
I haven't used it before, but I hear is quite good. Should be able to give you a good overview, as well as good answers to any beginner questions from the forums - there's also a shed load of tutorials!

Hope you get caught up in the whole php thing - stick with it!

All the best,

J

I sure want to, J - gosh, do I ever! This stuff looks like it would be great to know and it can do so much that would help me with my affiliate program - not only with affiliates, but with protecting my products, as well!

Thanks for that link - will definitely read that over, it does look like a warehouse of help and info; just what I need. I hate learning things when I have trouble "getting it", but boy, if I do get it working, what a feeling!!

Again, I sincerely thank you for all your help.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, SHE SURE DOES!! Paid for some more scripts last night and am going to buy a book - I'd like to delve more into this MySQL database stuff, too! But, one thing at a time as I do realize I've barely got my toe wet here. But nothing like enthusiasm for a motivator!

To anyone reluctant - JUST DO IT!

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I don't have any suggestions here.
I just wanted to comment on how much I enjoyed reading this thread. It's one of the friendliest and most courteous chats I've read in a long time. Nice to see.

RE: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhh... what a nice thing to see on a hung-over Monday morning! Brings a tear to the eye it does!

Jeni - DO start fiddling with mySQL - it's some seriously good stuff. I spent most of my time using Microsoft SQL Server and Access projects - I'm now coming up with excuses at work to use mySQL and php! ;)
