I feel like complete idoit

here is my problem..
I am runing mandrake 8.2

I have mysql running.
and apache 1.3.24
I followed the dircctions for

installling php with apache.
I installed php using the rpm that came with the mandrake cd.
I installed the apache from source and I thing the mysql from the rpm package.

my problem is that the reason I installed the php from using tar I couldn't use make--there was no make or makeinstall after a configured it.
I tried two different php tar packages..(am I missing something)

anyway that is why i use the rpm.
now i tried to compile apache using this command
--activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a

it says the above is unable to locate.

so anyway i decided to write this in the httpd.conf

I put in
LoadModule php4_module libexec/libphp4.so

and under the add type I put in
AddType applications/x-httpd-php .php

I stop apached before i added thoses two lines
and saved and restarted.

now to my problem
my browser don't see the php can anyone help me.. i have been trying to do this for a long time and don't know what I am missing.
Thank and please forgive any mis-spelling
Naomi.

wits end..
