I think that anyone who wants to learn OOP should learn java. Java makes it real easy to get into the OOP frame of mind. But for PHP structured approaches work just as well as OO approaches. I think which one you choose to program in depends on the task at hand, your skill level, and other factors like the number of people that will be working with you on the application.
