Adding alias map

I am running on a virtual server and would like to place files outside the root, accessible through my php script. My php is currently located in /home/username/sub.mydomain.com/html/abcdefgh and I would like to put documents in /home/username/abcdefgh. I have no idea how to create an alias to link to these documents and how to write the hyperlink when it is set up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
