Create domain
Hi:
I currently have apache/php/mysql running on my computer. I've been doing some reading on DNS servers. I was wondering, is it possible to create a domain name, just for a test to see if it works, without registering it through a registrar? I know there's DNS services out there like: http://www.dyndsn.org where you can signup one for free. But I'm just wondering, is there a way you can create like a test domain name, like: yourdomain.com If it's available that is, and it will work with my apache server? Is that possible, or isn't it? Thanks for your help!! Ken Cooper |

RE: Create domain
yeah, set up your dns's resolv.conf file to point to the server you are on now (localhost) then configure your domain through dns normally.

RE: Create domain
Um... ok, lets say I wanted to create a domain, temporarily, called:
mydomaintest.com It isn't available, so it works. Since I'm really new to this, could you give me an example/step-by-step of how to do that? How can I get that domain above to point to my server? Thanks for your help and time!! Ken Cooper |

RE: Create domain
The only way to get it to permanently point is by registering it. Any DNS queries for a website query the 13 root servers. Unless, you were to edit your hosts file on every pc you wanted to access it from.

RE: Create domain
Hi again:
Let me put this in a different question. Do you know of ANY websites out there that didn't get their domain name by a registrar, that's not off another website? Like I was thinking, just for a test, create a domain: mydomaintest.com Just for laughs and giggles. And just to see if it works, NOT perminately, just temporarily. I just thought there had to be a way to get a domain name. What is a registrar? What do they do to make our domains work? Ken Cooper |

RE: Create domain
No, no domain on the internet is there without being registered. A registrar does just that, registers your domain. What a registrar will do is get your domain name added to the root servers that all dns servers rely on for DNS lookups. Without your site listed there, it doesnt work.
