Domain problem
I'm having a web address issue.
Is there folders I should have files in or is this a cpanel problem? www.website.com will work if I type that in the address bar, but website.com will NOT work. It comes up with '(403) Forbidden'. Anyone come across this before? All help appreciated |

RE: Domain problem
Sounds like a dns issue...www. and with www are pointing to different places. Ping each address and see what the IP is. If they both go to the same IP, then it is an apache issue because the serveralias isn't set in the httpd.conf file.

Actually, Matt, it's not a DNS issue but a website hosting provider issue. It is in the Webserver configuration where www.somesite.com versus somesite.com is aliased, and if they are using mass hosting aliases they will end up going to different file system locations unless they are configured correctly. |

RE: Domain problem
Actually the problem is caused by no DNS A record for the domain name it self, but there is a DNS A record for either the host name WWW or for the fully qualified host.domain name. The www is a host name and the difference between just a domain and host.domain is not due to an alias.

RE: Domain problem
kwikone, first, please don't drag up old threads.
Second...yes it could be a DNS issue. That is why I had them determine if the IP was the same for both hostnames. If they are, THEN it is an apache issue. And I have no idea why you think (in this thread and another) that it is a "website hosting provider issue". The poster doesn't say anything about being hosted by someone. Maybe they have their own VPS or dedicated server? |

RE: Domain problem
Matt... you are right, I did 'presume' they were being hosted.. my apologies. However, what 'old thread'?
And, since 'hosted' systems are far in excess of VPS or self-hosted it 'normally' is a good presumption (plus the fact that 'cpanel' was mentioned and that is a common tool for 'hosted' solutions - and some VPS solutions). |
