Hardware Recognition

Alright, I need help here, I'm a total and complete linux n00b.

So over the holiday, my dad and I decided to learn linux(he'd used like red hat 2 at work a long time ago and wantes to relearn) So anyway, he foind a copy of red hat 9 at his office. So we go about installing it on this extra computer we have lying around. Everything went well, but 1 problem. It won't recognize my network card. Its a kingston KTE100 , which the redhat site says it supports, but I can't figure out how to get it to recognize it, it found everything else fine, can anyone give me a hand?

RE: Hardware Recognition

The Linux Ethernet How To can be found at www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO.html.

You may need to find appropriate drivers for your ethernet card off the Internet. If a driver for the card doesn't exist, you may want to investigate finding an older card. I have an old SMC TX10/100 which works beautifully in my Mandrake servers.

In a worse case scenario, you may need to see how your kernel has been compiled to see if it supports Ethernet. But this would be after all other troubleshooting options has been exhuasted.

RE: Hardware Recognition

Thank you very much. I got it worked out thanks to that nice site.

(Sotty a little off topic here) but can anyone recommend some sites or something on linux tutorials, for total and complete idiots? That would be great. Thanks!

RE: Hardware Recognition

No problem! I'm glad you got it working.

www.tldp.org is a good site containing many more how-to and articles. You may also want to try the discussion groups area of google.
