internet connection

Hello:

If I was to setup a server in my home, what would be the recommended Internet connection that I would need for it to run smoothly? Any help on this would be great!

RE: internet connection

this depends on a few things:

1) Intended Server Load
2) Number of visitors
3) Number of Websites
4) What you will do with the server

if you intend to run say a personal site and perhaps a few small applications (such as web based forum) then you could probably get away with 256kbps (low end dsl). I have setup a server of my own on a 1.5mbps, at first i setup a server on 512kbps but that was for a small website with less than 5000 visitors a month, so anything higher than 256kbps you could get away with. Techincally you can run a server off dial-up but this is unreliable and too slow, your better sticking with cable/dsl lines. Also one more thing you had better check with the ISP you intend to use as they might not allow servers to be hosted on there lines.

Another thing this depends on and you had better check with the ISP is the monthly transfer cap.

Bell Sympatico, in ON, CA, have low end dsl, at 512k, with a 2MB, per month, cap. Once you exceed that, they go from just robbing you to sodomizing you.
