IP address question

What im trying to find out is, I thought IP address changed when you went from place to place. When i was home i went to www.whatismyip.com and checked IP address and wrote it down, now im 500 miles from home and went there and checked and it was the same. Is there a reason why it is still the same.

RE: IP address question

Most probably your country has static ip's. Not dynamic ones.

RE: IP address question

Depends on your system config and as CodeKadiya, your area/country maybe set for static ip connections only.

If you checked from home and your local system at your home computer is a static ip and you used the same system when away, it'll always be the same ip if it is configured as static.

Part of this is how you connect and the system your using when you connect.

RE: IP address question

Now you have me curious.

Your in the USA and use a cable from home and dial up remotely.

Are you dialing long distance from your hotel to your normally local ISP ? Or are you using a temporary service via the hotel ?

Let's see what your IP is on your system.

I'm assuming your using a windows system, do the following:

Click "Start Menu"
Select "run"
When the run box shows up type in "cmd"
Whe the command window comes up (will look like a dos type interface with black background, type in
"ipconfig /all"

You see something like

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-cc.cc.cc.cc
Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.65.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 172.17.65.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : ###.###.###.##

If the DHCP enabled is as above, then you have a static IP, if it says "DHCP enabled....yes" then you have a dynamic IP.

If your dynamic, that is strange that you would get the same IP at both.

RE: IP address question

That's correct, your static with dhcp--no

So this part of the return info:

IP Address ....XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

should also be what you saw when you did the whatismyip.com look ups

RE: IP address question

Correction, that is assuming your static ip is public and not private. If private then when you connect to the internet you may be assigned a public IP when your system (ISP, network server, etc) does NAT (network address translation).

IP address question

If you are going 500 miles away and using a different ISP then it is impossible for you to have the same IP address.

If it is the same ISP then they are assigning you the same IP

RE: IP address question

At home like i said i have a cable modem, here i use aol to get online, That could very well be the reason. I tried to check www.whatismyip on Internet Explore and get website not available, when i do it on aol browser then it comes up the same as at home.

RE: IP address question

The page is cached somewhere. AOL uses a different IP address for each page request
