Nameservers
Hi,
I recently purchased a VDS (Still being Setup), I am allocated 2 ips for the server. I can buy more if i like but if i dont need 3 why buy 3. So my question is i intend to use 1 ip as the main server ip and i need to setup 2 nameservers, is it possible to setup 2 nameservers on 1 ip or do i need 1 ip for each nameserver. Any help is appreciated. Andrew. |

RE: Nameservers
Most domain registeries require that your two DNS Servers be on seperate IP addresses. They also strongly suggest that they be on totally different networks for redundancy purposes.
When you start BIND, it typically binds to "0.0.0.0:53" TCP/UDP ... so, if you have two addresses on your box, it will listen on both IP addresses automatically. Which is great, less to configure. That assumes your running BIND on an *nix platform. Hope that helps ya out! |

RE: Nameservers
Let me know how you make out. I've been contemplating setting up a DNS server for some experience (and hopefully to iron out some wrinkles that have been showing up in my mail service).
