Proxy Servers?

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to experiment with proxy servers, and I understand that Apache can act as one, however I am not sure that I set it up correctly.

I uncommented the proxy modules from http.conf (except the ftp because I dont need it). Added the <IfModule> tag as suggested in the Apache docs, and set my browser to connect to it as the proxy.

Now I think I also need to tell it what port (I changed Apache from its default) aswell? Otherwise I was getting a impropery proxy setting error (or along those lines). However if I put in the port for apache I will get an error saying that the directory does not exist on this server (I.e. if I went to www.google.com it would say that /google does not exist on this server) if I added a folder in my document root called google then it would navigate to that folder. So it does not appear to be going out to the internet?

Any ideas/Help etc

Thanks
Trev

I don't know if Apache still does that. I have not seen any documentation on it in a long time.

Why not use some free software like free proxy?

Are you sure you need a proxy server? The dlink firewalls are very powerful these days. They have port blocking, Black and white lists. They even have models to compete with cisco for a fraction of the price.
