Remote administration

Alright, so here's another question. I have a linux box sitting in the same room to me, and connected to our LAN. What I want to do is be able to control it from my computer. Like you know, how there are thos programs that you can control another machine via a little window on your desktop? Thats what I'm looking for, but free. Any ideas? I know I can use telnet to run commands, but I really don't have a good grip un them, so I'd like to be able to use the GUI. ANy suggestions?

RE: Remote administration

Hey Mr. Pickle,

Try to make an effort to admin your box via shell. It will help you in the long run understand whats really going on. If you run into problems postem here. I'll be happy to help you.

It's good to know how to do it command line, Postalcow always says; "Learn it, it's good for the soul"

RE: Remote administration

Yeah, postalcow is definitely right. An admin who can do most of their administration through the shell is worth their weight in gold. I havent known many that were good to get let go from jobs too. Something to think about.

RE: Remote administration

I do plan on working out of the shell eventually, but I'm trying to slowly glide into it, so it isn't as painful of a smack in the face. I mean, I have years to learn linux stuff, maybe I'll set that as my summer project.
And can you recommend a starting point for the shell stuff? (preferably online) I way too often read stuff, and they assume you have a clue. I've never stepped out of windows my entire 16 years of life, so I know about nothing

RE: Remote administration

Well, Ive never really taken a tutorial online for UNIX. Since your from Dallas, and I am from Dallas, you are more than welcome to borrow any of the books that I have in my library. Additionally, if you would like a shell account, I have a Sparcstation running Solaris 9 and a Linux box running RH9. Your more than welcome to put those resources at your disposal.

I would start familiarizing yourself with SSH. Its much more secure, and a lot of servers are using it in place of telnet these days.
