rsync

I was wondering if someone could tell me something about rsync.
I have a machine that I have to backup a ton of data from; 14GB+.
I know how to use rsync, but when I tried to do the initial sync, the machine choked on itself. What I'm wondering is, if I were to issue an rsync for a*, then b* etc... could I then rsync the entire amount of data over top of that in the future?
