Samba and Win Xp

Recently ive managed to get a small wireless network running between a linux box and win xp pro laptop that i have. Today i managed to get basic file sharing working quite easily however this is where my problem is....

Assuming the laptop is called Saturn and the Linux box is called Jupiter

i can access Jupiter (Linux, Samba Server) from Saturn (Win Xp) like this

\JupiterSOMESHARE

this is quite easy right? Even got some drives mapped but thats not important

My problem is when i try to use Jupiter (Linux, Samba Server) to connect to Saturn (Win XP)....

If i try

Code:

\saturnSOMESHARE

or

Code:

smb://saturn/SOMESHARE

it does not work however

Code:

smb://<SATURNS IP ADDRESS>/SOMESHARE

does work, i plan to add another machine to the network and of course its not the best solution to be working on IP address's considering they change when ever a machine disconnects etc

So my question is how can i get something like smb://saturn/SOMESHARE or \saturnSOMESHARE to work?

Thanks

Andrew

RE: Samba and Win Xp

Jupiter being a Linux box isn't necessarily the cause. We've seen this happen at many Windows-only LAN parties. The cause must be in the spiritual part of Windows.

RE: Samba and Win Xp

Not sure if you're still working on this or not, but some things to check might be whether or not you enabled your samba serer as a wins server as well, and if so, told the windows machine what it's ip is. NT/2000/XP don't use netbios by default so use of a wins server, or dns is necessary. If your network will remain small simply add each node to the hosts file on each machine.
