Strange Disk usage

Hi,
i have a small vps which i use to host my site and a friends site, recently i have noticed high disk usage. I do have cpanel/whm installed on the vps as that came free with it, the disk space is supposed to be 7gb after the cpanel/whm install. When i look at the total spaced used by the two domains it totals to about 1gb if that, yet under disk usage in cpanel/whm and in shell it shows as total disk usage at 69%.

I havent got alot of files on it, my site only totals to about 10mb. Can anyone suggest why i have such high disk usage? I dont have any backup files or anything on there, i could do a full vps restore if i asked the D/C but i dont want to go that far if it is something simple.

I guess it is partly my fault for not paying much attention to the vps as it is not very important to me.

This happened to me recently on my host. I found that one possible reason was Apache's error and access log files, which were never emptied. They can grow quite rapidly, and you may not be able to empty them yourself.

My advice would be to ask your host to check them out, if "they" have access to them (mine didn't since they outsource their servers in the States, and had to reset my entire account!). Ask them if they can set up a rotation system, so that you only ever keep the freshest entries in your log files.

ok thanks, im sure i can get rid of them. Just have to work out how to get whm to do it, i can do it via ssh but tinkering with apache by ssh usually corrupts whm or something like that.

managed to get it to drop by 1%, i cleared all the logs for the current domains but i think there are still logs from old domains which i need to find and clear them.

aha i found it, for a random reason when i first got the vps i set it up to backup to the same partition every month which is a bit stupid but the files built up over time causing lots of disk usage.

Usage went from 69% down to a healthy 24%

Ahh if only i could tidy up my main server by that percentage.
