Web Server Mirroring?

Okay (deep breath).

Situation - web server is a dedicated Linux Server running the full works: Apache, mySQL, PHP, SSL, SSH, VNC server etc. Runs off a Windows 2k network server (IIS) via virtual directory and utilising a proxy server.

The client wants a second dedicated Linux Server to act as a mirror(?) to the whole web server, i.e. mirror (backup?) the whole web site, mySQL database (including priveledges etc). If the first server goes down, the second server can take over to host the site.

Is this possible - and does anyone have any ideas whats-so-ever?

Me and the dept are coders by heart although we dabble in pretty much anything, so I'm working outside my envelope on this one!

Please help - any idaes very welcome.

RE: Web Server Mirroring?

Jester,

I have never done it before, but it is possible. With some of the clustering software out there it can be configured that way. The newer versions of bind can do the rest.

If you ever hit a webpage that had something like www1.xxx.com www2.xxx.com exc. This is basically when one server is taking too much traffic and it will fail over to the next server in the array (www2). I would guess it needs to be clustered so that the other is the mirror. There is a Linux HA (High Availibility) project out there you can read more on it and answer some of your questions http://linux-ha.org/
