Anonymous Posting

How does one post anonymously to the forums now? That's a feature that we definitely need brought back if it was lost in the switch over.

We have Anonymous posting disabled across all of your forum sites because it protects our members and makes spam control much easier.

I'm curious as to why you would like to have it enabled?

I believe it was mainly used on the old forums by people who did not want to register and just wanted a quick answer to something.

Well, yes, I mean I understand that. But it allows spammers post equally as easily unfortunately. Plus, it's been my experience that many times anonymous users never return. Since they can't get a reply notification, most forget.

All the same, I'll pass on the suggestion.

From what? I assume this is different from spam control since you mentioned it separately.

Also, captchas prevent anonymous spam.

I've heard a number of requests on this one. I'll take a look at what may be involved in adding this functionality to our forum software...

If memory serves me correctly, there were several discussions whether to have anonymous posting or not in the administrators' forums and such back in the day. The consensus was that it was something good to have.

Someone didn't have to create a user account to ask a question If they're looking for a quick bit of help. Helping people was more important than getting a large "registered members" statistic. It also kept the registered members stat more "pure" since there wouldn't be a bunch of usernames used by those who were only going to ask one or two questions and then leave anyway.

Some of us posted questions, comments or answered posts as Anonymous when we didn't want someone to know our "true" identity. This saved us (especially some of the admins/super users) from having to create multiple user accounts.
