BBS software suggestion.

Since this is a PHP/SQL dev forum, I think it might be fitting to run a prominent PHP-based BBS... and I would recommend phpBB. I use it quite a bit (and write mods for it); it's an exceptional, free BBS, especially for PHP nuts like us.

I've written a couple of simple BBS scripts, so I know there's an element of pride in having your site running your own BBS, but honestly, this board is seriously lacking in features and navigability. I'd think a site dedicated to PHP would be running a board like this more up to par with current BBS standards.

While this board does have a few nice features -- i.e. immediate access to the threads I've posted in -- this just doesn't outweigh the advantages you'd gain by running a standard BBS.

I like this place; even if my questions haven't been answered (even Devshed rarely helps much, considering when I need help it tends to be on very obsure problems), it's nice to have a place that's just for PHP/DB devs. It'd be a lot nicer, though, if it were actually a full-featured board.

RE: BBS software suggestion.

i think a more popular BBS would make this site far, far less appealing. but that's just my opinion.

What kind of features are lacking, i too use phpBB alot and i dont find it much better than this because the basic phpBB install is just the same as electrified penguin in terms of functionality and features....

RE: BBS software suggestion.

Please take a look at the security exploits in phpBB from the past year. Then come back and tell me why I should change?

RE: BBS software suggestion.

this forum has all the features necessary for this site, and isn't that all that is important?

plus, if i were to suggest any bbs as a change, it would be SMF, not phpBB

the only thing lacking that i would like to see, is a view all new posts since last visit button, so i dont have to go through the lists

That is on my list to replace the recent posts view. It should hopefully be done soon.
