Words Filter

Matt,

This is going to be something bad... Not sure whether you have taken a action on this! But better to make a words filter as soon as possible because it will help when no moderators are logged in.

Weldone cow! That's what it deserved!

But we need to take a long term action on this, when admins are not logged in

If you see another one drop an admin a private message and we'll jump right on it.

RE: Words Filter

I see a big problem in word filters. It is impossible to list all the unwanted words and the lists are too easy to cheat (by misspelling for example) and that way they're useless. What I'd suggest is immediate disabling of anonymous posting. It is far more effecient, as after that every poster needs to be registered and that way you can control them easier.

On the other hand, the person might register multiple times. There is also solution (not perfect though) for this but many users dislike it. Simply block registrations with free email addresses and allow only one account per email address.

You all have to admit, Codewalkers has grown BIG. It means that a lot of people know about it, and a lot of people always contains jerks.

RE: Words Filter

But is he mis-spelled it, you don't need to filter it. It would be suitable to display if he has made a mistake. Only if the correct word is there, you need to hide it

RE: Words Filter

Well misspelling makes it look and feel even more stupid. But it's up to Matt to decide.

Matt, when will you organize the press conference?

RE: Words Filter

Well, this is my point! It does not matter whether you have a words filter in your forum or not, you got to keep in touch as moderators. But I just wanted to bring out the fact that when the moderators are not logged in, it is just a good feature to add this filter up. May be it won't do any sort of filtering of words, if they've misspelled it. But who knows, at least then we can filter correctly spelled ones (as we saw a post in last week). This is not a 100% sure way to moderate a post though it will do just a supporting job until admins log in...

On the other hand, I don't think this filter script is a very difficult script to code someone like Matt. The thing is the loss will be more than that difficulty if new users come here and go away seeing those foolish posts. We know there are lot of discussion boards in the net where we do not get this atmosphere to discuss. So, what I mean is they would come here and go back thinking 'this is another forum of that kind'....

It is always nice to have 'Word Filters' to keep up the quality of the forums...

RE: Words Filter

You can't have a filter. What would it do to the famous actors name "**** Van Dyke"

All you would see is "**** Van ****" and that is a real guys name

RE: Words Filter

Hey! Please someone can moderate above post by cow?!?!?!??

If there are famous like that, then don't add them to words list. We'll select PostalCow to make the words list for us!

RE: Words Filter

Fine, put a words filter if you want to... But again I warn you that it is impossible to list all unwanted words. Eventually the list will grow big and this automatic moderation will slow everything down.

RE: Words Filter

Hmm yeah, admins are the best option. Did you even mean that Matt should get new ones? I don't think the situation is actually that bad yet... I'm just eager to see Matt's opinion on the whole thing.
