While I do concur the ebook is pretty good, to me if you want to learn PHP - you not only read a book, you go to
1) the manual - no better place to learn with the examples 2) communities such as these and not just ask questions - but answer them. even if it is about something you do not know - great reason to do some research and teach yourself. 3) an IRC channel. Just lurking and reading about what others are doing and how they solve their problems teaches you a lot and exposes you to areas you never would have found on your own. the better you get - the less you rely on a book. Though admittedly you should never give that book up since it will later be a reference for you.

IRC channels are real time topic based chat channels for multiple users (think kinda like icq but bigger). they are free to join and no matter what OS you are on - there is a free client program to access them.
I started out using just the chatzilla extension for Firefox and am most on the irc.freenode.net server. Channels I am in when I am online ##php (general PHP help channel - ~400 members), #mysql (general MySQL help channel - ~400 members), #phpc (the phpcommunity channel - ~90 members), #phpwomen (we are a very small group) and #web (web help - html, javascript, css - ~130 members). Currently I use a free version of xchat for windows though. if you are just getting started - stick with chatzilla till you get comfortable. and best advise I can give you is to sit and watch at first... each channel has it's own culture and "feeling" that a person should be aware of - from brusque to very chit chatty. and all are great for immediate help when you need it. Best move i ever made was joining them. for more general information on IRC see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat Last edited by lig : August 2nd, 2007 at 10:16 AM. |
