Pear Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer Issue

I have an issue with the new versions of Microsft Excel not being able to view .xls files created using Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer / php. On older version of excel and Open Office the generated .xls file is viewed perfectly. If anyone has any insight into the issue it will be of great help.

Pear spreadsheet_excel_writer

Hello,

We too facing the same issue where .xls files created using spreadsheet_excel_writer can't open in latest excel versions.

Is there any option to create .xlsx files instead using spreadsheet_excel_writer?

This pear package is not maintained. The last work done on it to fix some bugs was nearly 5 years ago, January 2012. The amount of work (several 100 man hours) to update and test it to work with the latest excel internal format isn't likely to occur. There may be other php projects posted on the web that do support producing the latest excel internal format.

If all you need is the ability to export data and open it in excel, just export the data using a CSV (Comma Separated Values) format. See php's fputcsv() function - http://php.net/manual/en/function.fputcsv.php

If you produce a file with the .xls extension, you should be able to open it in excel and then save it as as a Microsoft XML .xlsx file. This 'works' in LibreOffice. Don't know if it will work using Microsoft excel or if this will support all the features you are using.
